Welcome to our class page!

Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Samuel and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs White, Ms Jarrett and Mr Ball (outdoor learning) who cover my teacher time out of class (Tuesdays from 10-11:30 and Fridays from 1)

On this page, I will outline what our Spring 2 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email: admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk

Here is an example of our weekly timetable for Avocets. This term our topic is Britan through the ages: How did the Ancient Greeks change the world?

WCR – Whole Class Reading

Reading

Our new class book is Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy which is an exciting adventure story about the Brightstorm siblings, Astra and Maia, who live in a world of daring explorers and dangerous skies. Their father, a famous airship explorer, went missing during a legendary expedition to the South Pole. The siblings are determined to find him, facing perilous storms, rival explorers, and incredible challenges along the way.

Our WCR sessions are supported by the Ashely Booth reading scheme and this term, Tuesday-Thursday, we will be looking at texts exploring scientists, songs from musicals and much more!

English

In English this term, we will be reading Greek myths and legends, learning how stories are structured and how writers describe characters and events. We will use these ideas to write our own myths. We will also learn how to write a non-chronological report about Ancient Greece, organising information clearly using headings and paragraphs.

Maths

In Maths, we will be learning about decimals and percentages, including how to compare them and use them in real-life contexts. We will also work on perimeter and area, learning how to measure and calculate the space around and inside shapes. In addition, we will explore statistics, where we will read, interpret, and create charts and graphs. We will also continue with Mastering Number to build strong confidence and fluency in key number skills.

History

In History, we will learn about when and where the Ancient Greeks lived and explore what life was like at the time. We will find out about important people from Ancient Greece, learn about Greek beliefs and festivals, and discover how and when the Olympic Games began

Science

We have Science Week in which children will be taking part in exciting workshops and activities, with lots of visitors coming in to share hands-on science experiences!

Art

In Art, we will explore Ancient Greek pots and patterns and experiment with clay techniques such as rolling, coiling, and joining. We will design and create our own Greek-style pot using patterns and symbols, we will decorate it with paint, and we will reflect on our finished piece.

PE

Avocets PE days are: Tuesday and Thursday. In PE, we will take part in fitness activities and circuits to improve our strength, stamina, and coordination. We will also develop our skills in hockey, including passing, dribbling, and team play

French

In French this half term, our focus l’ecole (school). We will be learning to say what we do and don’t have in our pencil case.

RW

In RW this half term, we will be exploring the key question ‘For Christians, what kind of king was Jesus?’

PSHE

In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. In Jigsaw, we will learn about keeping our bodies healthy and safe. We will find out about the health risks of smoking, vaping, and alcohol, learn how these can affect the body, and understand basic emergency procedures and how to get help. We will also discuss how the media and social media can influence how people feel about their bodies and food, and we will learn what makes a healthy lifestyle

Computing

In Computing, we will use Purple Mash to develop our skills with spreadsheets. We will practise using formulas to solve problems, convert measurements, and create graphs to show how data changes over time. We will also use spreadsheets to analyse weather data, plan and budget for an event, and organise information to plan a holiday.
