My name is Miss Clarke, and I am the class teacher. Mrs White covers my time out of class on a Tuesday.
Our PE days are:

Book changes are on a Friday, please ensure that your child’s reading books and reading records are returned. Please read with your child at least five times a week and record all reading in your child’s reading record so that they can be awarded reading certificates.

Topic
Our topic question for this term is, ‘What do we need to survive?’
Reading and Phonics
At our school, we use the Read Write Inc phonics programme to teach our children to read. At 10 am every day, the children move around the school to their phonics groups. We ensure that children are placed in groups that match their abilities so they feel confident reading the books they take home. The children are assessed every half term to support their progression through the scheme.
English
We will be learning how to write a character description. We will use basic skills in our sentences (capital letters, finger spaces and full stops) to describe a character and will begin to use expanded noun phrases. In the second English unit for this term, we will write a non-chronological report about what a human needs to survive.
Maths
We will initially focus on place value within 20 and will explore numbers using practical resources such as counters, cubes and ten frames. We will learn to recognise, represent, compare, and order numbers to develop an understanding of what each digit represents. We will then apply this knowledge to addition and subtraction within 20. Number lines and part-whole models will be used to solve addition and subtraction calculations.
Science
In science, we will be answering our topic question, ‘What do we need to survive?’ Year 1 children will identify and label the basic parts of the human body and will be able to explain which part of the body is associated with each sense. Year 2 children will learn that animals, including humans, have offspring that grow into adults. We will also learn to explain the basic needs for survival that animals and humans require.
PE
We are fortunate that a rugby coach will be teaching one of our PE lessons each week. During these lessons, we will be learning some basic skills. We will also be learning basic swimming skills once a week with the support of swimming instructors.
Computing
We will learn to code using the tool, 2Go. we will learn to build simple algorithms to move an on-screen turtle along different routes. In order to create commands, we will think about the direction and distances that we use to move an on-screen object.
RWE
RWE, we will learn that Christians believe that Jesus brings good news to everyone, especially those in need, lonely or burdened. We will explore what this good news means and why Jesus is so important to Christians. We will also think about what ‘good news’ means to us and why something can be important enough to share with others.
PSHE
This half term, will reflect on our hopes and fears for the year and learn how to recognize feelings of worry and seek help. We will explore belonging in our class and school community, developing an understanding of rights and responsibilities.
DT
In D&T, we will learn how to prepare foods for a healthy smoothie. We will explore a selection of healthy foods and decide which we are going to use in our smoothies. We will learn how to hygienically prepare these foods with the support of an adult. Once we have made our smoothies, we will evaluate them by thinking about what we would keep the same or change if we were to make them again.
