At Starcross Primary School, we want every child to leave Starcross with the skills of an early Musician. It is well recognised that music can help to develop the skills, attitudes and attributes that can support learning in other national curriculum subjects. This includes listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuitions, aesthetic sensitivity, perseverance, the ability to work in a group, self-confidence and sensitivity towards others. Music can also aid memory, which is why singing nursery rhymes and action songs are particularly good for a child’s early development.
At Starcross we follow the Sing Up curriculum. Sing Up encourages and supports singing and musical learning with children and young people so that they:
- Learn to sing well and enjoy singing
- Develop musical skills and understanding
- Experience the wider learning and developmental benefits that singing and music making provides
- Experience long-term benefits to their health and well-being
We offer a great deal of wider opportunities for music at Starcross including Young Voices, the Ivy Trust music project, peripatetic music lessons, live performances from professional musicians and a school choir that runs all year round, with opportunities to perform throughout the year.
