Avocets – Year 5

Welcome to our class page!

Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Samuel and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs White who covers my teacher time out of class (Tuesday from 10)

On this page, I will outline what our Summer 2 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email: admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk

Key information

  • PE days are Tuesday and Friday. Please come in wearing your PE kit.
  • Spelling homework is set on a Friday via Spelling Frame, to be completed by the next Friday
  • TTRS is to be completed at least three times a week
  • Reading at home should be completed at least 4-5 times a week. The children will receive a certificate once they have read 25,50,75 etc times ta home

Here is an example of our weekly timetable for Avocets. This term our topic is Why are rainforests vital for our world?

WCR – Whole Class Reading

Reading

We have started to read our new class book which is The last Wild by Piers Torday which follows a boy called Kester who discovers he can talk to animals in a world where many species are disappearing. Alongside a group of animal companions, he goes on a dangerous journey to uncover the truth behind a mysterious illness and help save the natural world.

Our WCR sessions are supported by the Ashely Booth reading scheme and this term, Tuesday-Thursday, we will be looking at texts exploring Brazil, rainforests, life cycles and classic novels.

English

In English, children will write a journey story using features such as relative clauses and figurative language while developing their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, including the use of prefixes. Children will also explore and perform poetry later on in the term.

Maths

In maths, children will learn to read, compare and calculate with decimals, understand and use negative numbers, convert between different units of measurement and solve problems involving volume and capacity. They will also be continuing with the Mastering Number programme, which continues to strengthen fluency, number sense and confidence with calculation.

Geography

In the geography unit, children will learn where rainforests are located, explore the different rainforest layers, identify plants and animals that live there, understand the effects of deforestation and create climate graphs to interpret rainforest weather patterns

DT

In this DT unit, children will research Brazilian food, explore and evaluate common ingredients and flavours, design and make Pão de Queijo using tools and equipment safely, and evaluate their finished product.

PE

Avocets PE days are: Tuesday and Friday. In PE, children will create and perform rainforest-themed dances using movement and expression, and develop teamwork, throwing, catching and tactical skills through playing Dartmoor 3 Ball.

French

Children will learn to develop their French vocabulary and speaking skills asking ‘Quel temps fait-il?’ (What is the weather?)

RW

In this RWE unit, children will explore what is important to Humanists and Christians, including their beliefs, values and how these influence the way they live their lives.

PSHE

In this Jigsaw unit (changing me), children will learn about the changes that happen as they grow older, including physical and emotional changes, personal hygiene, relationships and understanding how to manage change positively and respectfully.
