Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Godbeer and I am the class teacher based in Avocets full time. We also have Mrs White who covers my teacher time out of class (Thursday morning).

Reading
This half term, we will continue to read “A Different Kind of Freedom: A Romani Story” by Richard O’Neill. This is a gripping football-filled adventure based in the Romani community of 19th century Sheffield. This action-packed story is told through the eyes of young Lijah, as he navigates life and discovers football and the legendary Rab Howell.
English
In English this half term, we will begin by exploring the story ‘Flotsam’. Flotsam tells a delightful story of a curious boy who explores a beach. He discovers a mysterious underwater camera, which leads to magical adventures. As he develops the film, unexpected images unlock a wondrous underwater world and connections across time. After exploring the story, the children will be writing their own version of Flotsam from a different viewpoint.
We will using be taking part in Poetry Week at the end of the half term!
Maths
In Maths this half term, we will continue to look at Decimals and Percentages, learning how to understand percentages and convert percentages into fractions. The next unit we will look at is Perimeter and Area.
Science
Our Science unit this half term is Properties and Changes of Materials. This project teaches children about the wider properties of materials and their uses. They learn about mixtures and how they can be separated using sieving, filtration and evaporation. They study reversible and irreversible changes, and use common indicators to identify irreversible changes.
History
Our History unit this half term is focused around the question “How did the Great Western Railway change Starcross?”. We will learn about where the GWR was built, who Isambard Kingdom Brunel was and understand what life was like in the Victorian times and impact of this on Great Britain and the local area.
Art
This half term, our Art unit is focused around Mixed Media. This project teaches children about paper crafts, papermaking and collage techniques, including paper, fabric, mixed media and photo collage. They will use their learning to create a final piece of small-scale, mixed-media collage.
PE
In PE this half term, we will be focusing on Athletics including, relay races, javelin and hurdles.
Religion and Worldview
In Religion and Worldview this half term, we will be looking at the key question ‘For Christians, what kind of King is Jesus?’
PSHE
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be focusing on the unit ‘Healthy Me!’
Music
In Music, we use the scheme ‘Sing up!’. This half term, we will be focusing on Balinese Music. This unit explores the music of Bali through two dynamic musical forms.
