Avocets – Year 5

Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Skinner and I am the class teacher based in Avocets. Mrs White covers my planning time out of class on Tuesday mornings.

Key information

PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please come in wearing your PE kit.
Reading needs to be completed and recorded in reading records at least 5 times a week.
Spelling frame is available for the children to use at home to practice their spelling pattern and play on the games. We use Spelling Frame to test our spellings on Fridays at school.
TTRS is to be completed at least three times a week.
All children’s logins can be found at the back of their new reading record.

WCR – Whole Class Reading

Reading

Our class book this term is Impossible Creatures. Impossible Creatures is written by Katherine Rundell. Inside it, lays a wonderful and exciting yet mystical adventure! We will read this together as a class and explore the key themes within the story, to develop our literacy skills.

Our WCR sessions are supported by the Ashely Booth reading scheme and this term, Tuesday-Thursday, we will be looking at texts exploring Brazil, rainforests, life cycles and classic novels.

English

n English this term, we will read ‘An Underwater World’ and expand our vocabulary to create a gripping setting description using expanded noun phrases. We will also challenge our inner survival skills and write an instructional guide on how to survive another planet!

Maths

This half term in Maths, our focus will be focusing on place value. We will look at identifying place value up to 1,00,000. We will also begin to build on addition and subtraction. As well as this, we will continue to embed previous learning to ensure we strengthen our fluency and arithmetic.

Science

This term in Science, Year 5 will explore Space and all the features that come along with it! Year 5 will be able to identify key scientific language and will be able to list the planets in order. We will carry out fun investigations, as well as challenge our curiosity.

Art

In Art, we will be focusing on abstract art. We will follow the artist ‘Peter Thorpe’ and copy his art style to create our own abstract paintings.

Curlews PE day is Monday and Thursday this term. On Mondays, Year 5 will have the opportunity to play rugby, coached by Exeter Chiefs Academy and learn the skills associated with this tactful sport. On Thursdays, we will learn gymnastics.

French

In French, we will learning French phonics. We will develop our listening, reading and oracy skills further throughout this half term.

RWE

In RW this half term, we will be exploring the key question ‘What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving?

PSHE

In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be looking at ‘Being Me in My World.’ We want to emphasise the importance of wellbeing and having rights and responsibilities.

Computing

We are now using a programme called ‘Purple Mash’ to teach computing as well as enhance other subjects. This term our focus will be game creator and online safety.
