Modern Foreign Languages

Intent
At Starcross Primary School, we want all pupils, regardless of need or barrier, to develop a passion for learning languages and exploring new cultures. Through learning French, we aim to inspire curiosity about the world, develop communication skills, and foster confidence in using a foreign language.
We seek to instil enthusiasm for language learning, cultural awareness, and the ability to communicate effectively in a range of real-life contexts. Our curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate linguistic diversity, understand how languages work, and explore how people live, celebrate, and communicate in other countries.
We value practical and engaging learning opportunities, including games, songs, role-play, and interactive technology. Pupils are encouraged to speak, listen, read, and write in French in meaningful ways, developing both linguistic skills and cultural knowledge. Through a progressive curriculum, we aim to nurture motivated, confident, and culturally aware language learners.
Implementation
French is taught throughout KS2 in weekly, structured lessons and project-based units, allowing pupils to build skills progressively and achieve depth in learning.
  • Listening and Speaking: Pupils develop confidence in understanding spoken French and expressing themselves through role-play, songs, and conversation.
  • Reading and Writing: Pupils explore French texts, stories, and instructions, gradually building vocabulary and grammatical understanding to write sentences and short paragraphs.
  • Cultural Awareness: Lessons include learning about French-speaking countries, customs, traditions, and daily life, helping pupils make connections between language and culture.
  • Practical Application: Pupils engage in interactive activities, games, and digital tools to reinforce learning, encouraging curiosity and enjoyment in language use.
Impact
By the time pupils leave KS2, they will:
  • Communicate confidently in French for a range of purposes, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
  • Use French vocabulary and structures accurately and with increasing independence.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of French culture and the wider Francophone world.
  • Apply language skills creatively and in context, making links to other subjects where appropriate.
  • Be motivated to continue learning languages at secondary school and beyond.
