At our school, the development of pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) understanding is at the heart of our curriculum and is woven through every subject and every aspect of school life. We believe that SMSC education is not confined to discrete lessons, but is embedded across all areas of learning, enabling pupils to grow into reflective, responsible and respectful members of society.
Our school values of self-awareness, teamwork, ambition, resilience and success underpin all aspects of SMSC development and are consistently promoted through teaching and learning across the curriculum.
Spiritual development is fostered through opportunities for pupils to explore ideas, express creativity and reflect on their own beliefs and experiences. Pupils develop self-awareness by considering their strengths, emotions and aspirations, while building ambition to achieve their personal best. Across subjects such as art, music, science and religious education, pupils are encouraged to develop curiosity, imagination and a sense of wonder about the world around them.
Moral development is promoted by teaching pupils to understand right and wrong, take responsibility for their actions and consider the impact of their choices on others. Through subjects such as PSHE, computing and design and technology, pupils learn about safety, fairness and ethical decision-making. They are encouraged to show resilience when faced with challenges and to take pride in making positive choices that lead to success.
Social development is embedded through collaborative learning, discussion and shared experiences. Pupils develop teamwork by working together across the curriculum—whether solving problems in mathematics, performing in music or engaging in practical tasks in design and technology. They learn to communicate effectively, respect different viewpoints and support one another to achieve shared goals.
Cultural development is enriched through a broad and inclusive curriculum that celebrates diversity and promotes understanding of different cultures, beliefs and traditions. Through subjects such as languages, religious education, music and art, pupils develop respect for others and an appreciation of the wider world. This supports their self-awareness as global citizens and encourages ambition to contribute positively to society.
By integrating SMSC across all subjects and year groups, and embedding our core values throughout the curriculum, we ensure that pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world. Our curriculum supports pupils to become confident individuals, resilient learners and successful, responsible members of their community.
