WCR – Whole Class Reading
Reading
Our Whole Class Reading focus on a Monday and Friday will be ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. A story about a boy named Auggie Pullman, who was born with a facial difference. When he starts school for the first time, he faces challenges with bullying and fitting in- but through kindness, courage, and friendship, he helps others learn to see beyond appearances Our WCR sessions are supported by the Ashely Booth reading scheme and this term, Tuesday-Thursday, we will be looking at texts exploring railways, remembrance day, energy and forces, picture books, classic stories and Christmas.

English
In English this term, the children will continue to develop their writing skills whilst writing a recount about the opening of the GWR and then creating Christmas themed poetry. They will continue to practice using more sophisticated punctuation and sentence structures such as relative clauses.

Maths
This half term in Maths, our focus will be multiplication and division and fractions. We will be learning to understand equivalence, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers and then using this knowledge to add and subtract fractions. We will also be starting ‘Mastering Number’ sessions to support the children’s timetables knowledge and the relationship between them.
Science
Our Science unit ‘Forces’ will be exploring the different types of forces we come across in our daily lives and we will have the opportunity to investigate these. Examples of these include: gravity, air resistance and friction.

Art
In Art, we will be focusing on abstract art inspired by Peter Thorpe. We will be exploring his techniques and creating our own abstract art inspired by the galaxy and solar system.

PE
Avocets PE days are: Monday and Thursday. This half term will be focused on Dance (choreographing visually pleasing pieces) and Football.
French
In French this half term, our focus is La Date. We will be learning how to say all the components of the date and have simple conversations about significant dates.

RW
In RW this half term, we will be exploring the key question ‘What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?’

Computing
We are now using a programme called ‘Purple Mash’ to teach computing as well as enhance other subjects. This term our focus will be designing and making our own 3D maze adventure game.
Music
In Music, our focus will be practising for the Christmas Carol concert.

History
In History, we will be learning about when and where the Great Western Railway was built and about the significant Individual of the time, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We will explore what life was like in the Victorian times and the impact that the building of the railways had locally and nationally.
PSHE
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be looking at what culture means and how this can sometimes be a source of conflict. They will think about the spreading of rumours and how bullying can be direct or indirect.
DT
In D&T, we will be learning about mechanisms and using our knowledge to design and make trains with a cam or lever.
