Welcome to the Curlews page

Mrs C Radcliffe
Hello and welcome to the Curlews class page. My name is Mrs Radcliffe and I am the class teacher. We have two 1:1 support assistants in class, Mrs Stockham and Mrs Jarratt.
We have already packed in so much learning during the Autumn Term and this term is shaping up to be just as full. We love seeing the progress children make in all areas across the year, from their achievements in lessons, to their growing confidence and independence in and around the school environment.
In the Spring term, many children begin to come away from daily phonics lessons but continue to use their phonic skills in guided reading sessions. Here, they read fluently with expression and develop their comprehension skills even further. Children become independent readers and use our Accelerated Reader programme.
Maths
We have daily Maths lessons, and we also have a ’10 minute Maths’ session most days, to help with understanding key facts, confidence and fluency.
Our main maths focus for the term will be ‘Shape,’ ‘Money’ and ‘Multiplication and Division.’ We develop our skills together as a whole class, with partners and independently. We use lots of practical maths resources to help us with our thinking and reasoning skills.
English
This term we will look at non-fiction text ‘My day at the zoo,’ by Jay Dale. Children will develop their writing skills to write a recount of an event.
Zim, Zam, Zoom is a poetry book by James Carter. Children will begin to explore kennings.
From Seed to Flower’ is an information text by Camilla De La Bedoyere. We will be using this book to learn how to write explanations.
Children will write a story based on the ‘Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward.
Children have been working hard on their KS1 spellings and have been developing their handwriting skills. This term we shall begin to look at cursive handwriting and how letters are formed before they are joined.
Art – Flowerhead – Spring 1.
This project is linked to Coastline.
This project teaches children about the visual elements of flowers, including shape, texture, colour, pattern and form. They also explore various artistic methods, including drawing, printmaking and 3-D forms, using paper and clay.
Design and Technology. Beach huts – Spring 2.
Also linked to Coastline. This project builds on from Year 1 skills and teaches children about making and strengthening structures, including different ways of joining materials.
Science. Uses of Materials – Spring 1.
We will build on our Year 1 knowledge about materials. We will think about the uses of everyday materials and how materials’ properties make them suitable or unsuitable for specific purposes. We will begin to explore how materials can be changed.
Science – Plant Survival – Spring 2.
Children will learn about the growth of plants from seeds and bulbs. They observe the growth of plants first hand, recording changes over time and identifying what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
Geography – Coastline.
This project teaches children about the physical and human features of coastal regions across the United Kingdom, including a detailed exploration of the coastal town of Whitby, in Yorkshire.
