Oystercatchers – Year 3

Welcome to Oystercatchers!

Class Plan | PDF

Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Moulster and I am the class teacher based in Oystercatchers full time. We also have Mrs Jarratt who covers my teacher time out of class (Friday afternoon).

On this page, I will outline what our Autumn Term 1 curriculum looks like. If you have any questions about this or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me; my door is always open. Otherwise, please email: admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk

Key information

  • PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please come in wearing your PE kit.
  • Spelling homework is set on a Monday via Spelling Frame, to be completed by the Friday
  • TTRS is to be completed at least two times a week as well as reading at least 4-5 times a week

Here is a weekly timetable for Oystercatchers. This term our topic is ‘All About Me’

Reading
Our Whole Class Reading focus on a Monday and Friday will be ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown. It is the wonderful story of Roz, a newly manufactured robot who becomes a castaway on an island with no human inhabitants. Our WCR sessions are supported by the Ashely Booth reading scheme and this term, Tuesday-Thursday, we will be looking at texts exploring song lyrics, Roald Dahl, keeping healthy, poetry, skeletons and Black history.

English
In English this term, our text is called ‘The Giant’s House’ which is a focus on setting description. Our key objectives will be to:

  • Use the spelling words “disappear”, “arrive”, “straight”, “through”, “various”, “fruit” and “centre”.
  • Focus on capital letters, full stops and apostrophes for contraction.
  • Use the forms a or an according to whether the next word begins with a consonant or a vowel e.g. a rock, an open box.
  • Express time, place and cause using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions e.g. when, before, after, while, so, because, adverbs e.g. then, next, soon, therefore, or prepositions e.g. before, after, during, in, because of.

Maths
This half term in Maths, our focus will be place value and addition and subtraction. We use the White Rose Maths scheme for Maths lessons, as well as daily flashbacks to ensure that previous learning is embedded. We also have a times table focus every afternoon to build fluency.

Science
Our Science unit ‘Animals including humans’ will explore different types of human and animal skeletons, comparing them and thinking about why some animals don’t have spines. We will also learn about how our bones, joints and muscles work together to help us move. We will then move onto thinking about how we can keep our bodies healthy, learning about the main food groups and what makes a healthy diet.

History
This project teaches children about the lives of significant people from the Ancient Greek times including Alexander the Great. We will also be learning about what life was like in Ancient Greek times and thinking about some of the beliefs the Ancient Greeks had and how they may differ from previous ages they have learnt about.

PE
Oystercatchers PE days are: Wednesday and Thursday. This half terms focus will be gymnastics and swimming and we have a coach joining us to teach cricket on a Thursday.

French
In French this half term, our focus is French phonics and understanding how to pronounce sounds and perfect our accents.

Computing
We are now using a programme called ‘Purple Mash’ to teach computing as well as enhance other subjects. This term our focus will be online safety.

Music
In Music, our focus will be’ Harvest’ we will be rehearsing for the Harvest Festival service, focusing on the songs “Harvest Rock and Roll” and “Cauliflowers Fluffy”.

Design and Technology
In DT, we will be designing and creating skeleton marionette puppets, building on our knowledge from Science. This will involve testing various tools and materials and using mechanical systems to create movement.

Religion and Worldviews
In RW this half term, we will be exploring the key question ‘What is it like for someone to follow God?’

PSHE
In PSHE, we use the scheme Jigsaw. This half term, we will be looking at Being me in my world.’ This will explore being a class team, rights and responsibilities, democracy and rewards and consequences.

Jigsaw
This half term for PSHE, we are thinking about ‘Healthy Me’. This will include how to stay fit and healthy, both physically and mentally, and we will think about some of the amazing things our bodies can do.
