Intent
At Starcross Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum inspires pupils to become inquisitive problem-solvers who can think creatively, work collaboratively and apply prior knowledge to real-life contexts in an ever-changing world. Children follow a clear process of design, make and evaluate to create purposeful products that meet specific design criteria.
We empower pupils by providing authentic, real-life opportunities where they can develop key skills and knowledge while making meaningful links with the local community and beyond. Pupils are encouraged to take risks, test ideas and evaluate the success of their designs, developing resilience and confidence in the process.
Through discussion, questioning, exploration and investigation, pupils build a rich vocabulary that enables them to communicate their ideas effectively in a variety of ways. In an increasingly technological society, we provide valuable, creative experiences that nurture curiosity, independence and enthusiasm for learning — preparing our pupils for future education and employment.
Implementation
Design and Technology is a crucial part of our school curriculum, and we are committed to delivering a high-quality, engaging and progressive learning experience for all pupils. This is achieved through:
A well-structured, whole-school yearly overview (based on the Cornerstones scheme of work) that ensures clear progression in knowledge and skills across all areas of DT — including textiles, mechanisms, structures, food and electrical systems.
Well-planned and resourced projects that provide pupils with rich, hands-on learning experiences.
The explicit teaching of health and safety awareness relevant to each task and material.
Each project following the design, make and evaluate cycle, incorporating technical knowledge and understanding within meaningful contexts.
Introducing pupils to a diverse range of designers, engineers, chefs, nutritionists and innovators, building their cultural capital and appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through both child-initiated and adult-directed activities. They have opportunities to:
- Use different media and materials to express their own ideas.
- Apply their understanding of materials in original ways, considering form, function and purpose.
- Plan and construct with a clear purpose using a range of resources.
- Develop the skills to use simple tools and techniques safely and effectively.
- Select appropriate resources for a product and adapt their work as needed.
- Cook and prepare food while following good health and hygiene practices.
Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, pupils gain confidence to take creative risks when tackling new challenges. They develop curiosity and problem-solving skills by following the design, make and evaluate process to produce purposeful products.
Pupils are introduced to subject-specific vocabulary to articulate their design ideas and learn to use tools, materials and techniques safely and effectively. They make informed choices about materials and methods, reflecting on their outcomes to adapt and improve their work. Through these experiences, pupils begin to understand how Design and Technology can positively impact everyday life and their local community.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, pupils become increasingly independent, confident and resourceful designers. They apply prior learning and cross-curricular knowledge to tackle more complex challenges, designing and making products that meet human needs and reflect the changing world.
Pupils take personal responsibility for each stage of the design, make and evaluate process, using research, creativity and technical understanding to inform their work. They are confident in selecting from a wide range of tools and materials, using them safely and with precision. Pupils critically evaluate both their own products and those of others, considering function, innovation and aesthetics.
Their work demonstrates increasing technical mastery, creativity and purpose.
Impact
Children at Starcross Primary School develop a genuine enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology, which they carry into other areas of the curriculum. Through carefully planned and sequenced learning, pupils acquire the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to design and make high-quality products.
They develop the ability to think critically and problem-solve, demonstrating resilience, imagination and a sense of pride in their achievements. Pupils’ progress is evident in their design books, practical outcomes and discussions, showing clear progression of skills and understanding across year groups.
By the time they leave Starcross Primary, pupils are well-prepared for secondary education, equipped with a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and curiosity — ready to thrive in an increasingly technological world.
