Intent
At Starcross Primary School, we want all pupils, regardless of need or barrier, to develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to support children’s personal development, wellbeing, and emotional resilience, preparing them to become confident, responsible, and respectful members of society.
We seek to nurture self-awareness, empathy, and positive relationships. Our curriculum encourages pupils to understand themselves, manage their emotions, make informed choices, and develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. PSHE supports children in understanding how to stay safe, both in the real world and online, and how to contribute positively to their communities.
We value open discussion, reflection, and a safe, supportive learning environment where pupils feel confident to share ideas, ask questions, and express their feelings. Through a progressive curriculum, we aim to develop caring, resilient, and socially responsible individuals.
Implementation
PSHE is taught across the school from Preschool to Year 6 through dedicated lessons, themed weeks, and cross-curricular links, with learning building progressively over time.
- Preschool and EYFS: Children learn about feelings, friendships, sharing, turn-taking, and self-care. They develop confidence, independence and an understanding of how to express emotions appropriately.
- KS1 (Years 1–2): Pupils explore themes such as relationships, keeping safe, managing emotions, and understanding what makes them unique. They begin to learn about healthy choices, rules and responsibility.
- Lower KS2 (Years 3–4): Pupils develop greater awareness of their bodies, emotions, and relationships. They learn about teamwork, respect, diversity and how to manage challenges and change.
- Upper KS2 (Years 5–6): Pupils deepen their understanding of physical and emotional wellbeing, relationships, personal safety, and responsibility. They explore topics such as puberty, peer pressure, online safety, financial awareness, and preparing for transition to secondary school.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in discussions, role-play, collaborative activities, and reflection, enabling them to apply learning to real-life situations.
