Our school council is made up of two representatives from each class starting in Year 1 through to Year 6. Each year in the first few weeks of term, classes hold a class election to vote for two council members who will represent their class for the year. Candidates give a short speech to their class to say why they would like to be a councillor and why they would be a good one and should be voted in. Secret ballots then take place to find the two candidates with the most votes.
The school council meetings are held on Thursday lunchtimes and we often meet twice a month but this can be more depending on what we are working on. The school council take on many important roles and responsibilities within the school.
In recent years we have worked on many projects including lots of charity work. We have supported the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal for Moldova sending off an amazing 40 shoeboxes to children and families less fortunate than us. We have also held fundraising collections to support our nominated school charity, Cancer Research as voted for by all the pupils. After successfully supporting Cancer Research and raising a lot of money over the last couple of years the school council asked the pupils if we should continue with fundraising for this charity or vote for a new one. It was voted for and decided that we would continue to raise money for Cancer Research but also to give half of the money raised to an animal rescue charity.
Other things that the school council have worked on include the annual sale of poppies for Remembrance Day. Last year the pupils and families of Starcross raised £236 for The Royal British Legion. The school council have had the privilege of decorating the school Christmas tree as well as many other important and exciting jobs. The school council are always acting as the voice of the pupils at Starcross and collect in regularly the classes views on the positives and possible improvements for the school. These points and ideas are then taken back to the senior leadership team after the school council meet with Mrs Trail.
Last year the children had requested some playground benches which the PTFA kindly funded and purchased. We are hoping to continue with further improvements to playtimes this year by looking at resources and equipment.
One of the latest large projects that the school council have taken a key role in is the design for our new school library, which will be built later this term. The school council met with the designers and spoke to the school in an assembly, then collected their classes views and ideas.
This year we are looking forward to continuing the fantastic work that last years councillors started, with some new projects along the way, including the burying of a new time capsule!
