Our school council is made up of two representatives from each class starting in Year 1 through to Year 6. Each year in the first few weeks of term, classes hold a class election to vote for two council members who will represent their class for the year. Candidates give a short speech to their class to say why they would like to be a councillor and why they would be a good one and should be voted in. Secret ballots then take place to find the two candidates with the most votes.
The school council meetings are held on Friday lunchtimes and we often meet twice a month but this can be more depending on what we are working on.
Last year the School Council organised and co-ordinated the school’s very successful Christmas Shoe Box Appeal for Moldova. We did an amazing job and sent off 40 shoeboxes to children and families less fortunate than us.
Other things that the school council got involved in were carrying out a whole school vote to come up with a charity for the school to support for the coming year. The chosen charity for 2023-2024 is Cancer Research. In the summer term the council looked at possible ideas for developing and maximising the use of the outside spaces directly outside of the classrooms now that we have new school fencing. We also shared what we have been doing with a group of School Governors at an open morning event.
This year we are looking forward to continuing the fantastic work that last years councillors started with some new projects along the way!
