Religion and Worldview

Intent
At Starcross Primary School, we want all pupils, regardless of need or barrier, to develop respect, curiosity, and understanding of religion and worldviews. Through exploring a range of religious and non-religious beliefs, we aim to support children in understanding themselves, others, and the diverse world in which they live.

We seek to encourage thoughtful, reflective, and open-minded learners who can ask meaningful questions about life, beliefs, values, and identity. Our Religion and Worldviews curriculum supports pupils in developing empathy, critical thinking, and an appreciation of different ways people understand and experience the world.

We value respectful discussion, enquiry-based learning, and opportunities for personal reflection. Pupils are encouraged to explore big questions, make connections between beliefs and actions, and understand how religion and worldviews shape individuals and communities. Through a progressive curriculum, we aim to nurture informed, respectful, and reflective citizens.

Implementation
Religion and Worldviews is taught across the school from Preschool to Year 6, with knowledge, understanding, and enquiry skills building progressively.

  • Preschool and EYFS: Children begin to explore ideas of belonging, special people, celebrations, and stories. They learn to respect similarities and differences and express their own thoughts and feelings about the world around them.
  • KS1 (Years 1–2): Pupils learn about key beliefs, stories, and celebrations from different religions and worldviews. They develop skills in asking questions, listening to others, and recognising how beliefs influence people’s lives.
  • Lower KS2 (Years 3–4): Pupils explore a range of religions and non-religious worldviews in greater depth. They compare similarities and differences, investigate religious practices and places of worship, and begin to understand symbolism and meaning.
  • Upper KS2 (Years 5–6): Pupils develop more complex understanding by exploring how beliefs influence moral choices, identity, and community. They consider philosophical and ethical questions, evaluate different viewpoints, and express their own ideas thoughtfully and respectfully.

Pupils engage in visits, visitors, storytelling, discussion, and creative activities that bring learning to life and encourage real-world understanding.

Impact
By the time pupils leave Starcross, they will:

  • Show respect and understanding for different religions and worldviews.
  • Ask thoughtful questions and engage in meaningful discussion.
  • Make connections between beliefs, values, and actions.
  • Develop empathy and appreciation for diversity.
  • Express their own ideas, beliefs, and values with confidence and sensitivity.
  • Be prepared to live respectfully and responsibly in a diverse society

Starcross RWE Progression Document

We have fantastic connections with our local church, St Paul’s. The children and staff enjoy celebrating Harvest, Christmas and Easter at the church and Reverend Patrick comes into Starcross Primary to deliver assemblies fortnightly.
